Dog Nutrition

When it comes to dog nutrition, keep in mind that dogs, like every animal, have a physiology that nature has developed through millions of years of evolution.  To ensure proper dog nutrition for your pet, you must take this into consideration.  Proper dog nutrition will incorporate every aspect of your dog’s physiological, biological, and psychological needs.  At The Dog Bowl, one of our paramount concerns is educating dog owners about the importance of proper dog nutrition and supplying the best dog nutrition products to the discerning dog owner.

A proper dog nutrition regimen should consist of natural, uncooked foods of both animal and plant origin. The right diet will include muscle meat, bone, fat, organ meat, and vegetable materials.  This resembles much of what dogs, and their canine relatives, have subsisted on since the dawn of their species.  Modern dogs are not only capable of eating the same food their wild ancestors ate, but they actually require such a diet to ensure optimal health.  The canine’s basic physiology has changed very little with domestication, despite the obvious differences in their modern physical appearances and behaviors.  Many zoologists embrace this rationale and follow this type of dietary regimen to preserve an animal species.

More and more veterinarians are supporting a raw food diet to supply the proper dog nutrition to our canine friends:

"The best diet is a raw food diet.– Charles E. Loops DVM

We are seeing disease conditions in animals that we did not see years ago.  Many of these may be traced to nutrition as the source.” – Don E. Lundholm DVM

"Eating supermarket pet foods is like eating cardboard.  Our pets just get by on them and the foods lack any real vitality for the flourishing of health.” – William Pollak DVM

"When I began to suggest the feeding of raw meat I found animals becoming more healthy even without other treatment.  Indeed, I have frequently had the report that people find their animals become healthy when they make this change and diseases for which they were hoping to have treatment (on a waiting list) have disappeared.  Since that time, other veterinarians have told me similar things about the use of raw meat.  Dogs and cats, being carnivores by nature, are meant to eat raw meat and do not have a problem doing so." – Dr. Pitcairn DVM

The raw food diets we endorse are:

Dr. Billinghurst’s B.A.R.F. Diet
Nature’s Variety (Prairie Brand)

These will provide your 4-legged friend the proper dog nutrition he needs, something mass-produced, processed dog foods simply can’t.

The popular, well-known dog food conglomerates sell poor quality, processed dog foods that seriously diminish the natural vitality and immune systems of many dogs.  They lack the correct amount and types of protein necessary for proper dog nutrition.  In fact, a lack of raw red meat in a dog’s diet can lead to serious health problems.  Dogs require the amino acids, enzymes, and other nutrients in raw meat in order to stay healthy.  Many skin and coat problems are the direct result of a lack of raw animal fat in the diet.  Dogs need at least 30% raw fat - and their digestive systems are not designed to handle cooked meat or cooked fat.

In conclusion, there are six main categories of dog nutrition to be aware of:

  • Protein
  • Carbohydrates
  • Fats
  • Minerals
  • Vitamins
  • Water

A proper, healthy diet for your dog will involve all of these dog nutrition categories in a sufficient manner.
