Dog behavior problems and solutions:

Similar to how sometimes we may be tired but we really think we’re hungry, therefore we eat. In the same token, we may associate one item with a completely different aspect when it comes to our pets. In other words, we “misdiagnose” dog behavior problems.

For instance, experts advise to proceed with caution when ruling out medical problems. Essentially, when looking at dog behavior problems it’s important to not confuse a behavior problem with a health issue. If your veterinarian prescribed medicine it may have side effects such as increased urination. Well, you may misinterpret this as a dog behavior problem when really it’s related to the medical issue. When in doubt, see a veterinarian but if you can determine the issue it may prevent a visit to the vet. For example, the next time your veterinarian prescribes medicine be sure to ask about side effects.

Another main dog behavior problem is reinforcements you’re giving him or her. You may inadvertently reward the wrong type of dog behavior. If your dog wimpers every time he wants a treat, you may give in. Well, this behavior can be interpreted as wimper equals treat. You may have a hard time getting your dog to stop wimpering if you’ve repeatedly rewarded this behavior with a treat. As for the solution? This is an easy one. Ignore the wimpers and definitely withhold the treats. Easier said than done. You’ll need to treat the dog like a child and realize this dog behavior problem will be a problem no more.

In another instance, your dog may pounce on you when you arrive at home which can result in jumping on you, scratching you, and even leaving black and blue marks! Well, to change this dog behavior problem and morph it into a situation you can control, pay attention to her only when she’s sitting and all four paws are on the floor. Reinforce this behavior with a treat.

Another simple solution to dog behavior problems is the environmental set up of the house or room. If your dog continually pokes around the garbage perhaps a solution is to take the trash can out of the room and into the garage immediately. In another instance of a dog behavior problem and simple solution, if your puppy consistently eats your children’s toys, simply put the toys away. Or put your puppy away in a crate or gated area when toys are out for a short period of time.
